Teaching travel sketching has been Erin’s particular passion for more than two decades. Previously, she was an Advertising art director, then a gallery owner. Now as a teacher she enjoys taking sketchers from their early moments with a sketchbook and pen, to pride and astonishment at the sketching result they achieve. Away from the studios Erin writes, illustrates and videos her technique online. She has since gained a considerable social media following.
At this workshop, Erin will start with a warm-up sketch of a still life set up on the table, with flowers such as hibiscus are great because of their big simple shapes and lovely colour. You will begin with her ‘How to see’ approach and plan getting the sketch onto your sketchbook.
Using aquarelle pencils, Erin will teach her method of layering of colour. This generally takes 2 hours to complete. She will then talk about the watercolour sets she uses – she has custom colours which match the Staedtler Noris Club aquarelles. After lunch Erin will take you outside to begin a sketch of trees and foliage. This time you will use watercolour and she will teach some of her tricks to get a bright and effective sketch.
Because this is travel sketching, you want a minimal sketch kit, with exactly what you need and nothing more!
Everything needs to fit in your shoulder bag and ready at any time:
