Dee Jackson – Figurative Watercolour

FIGURATIVE WATERCOLOUR WITH DEE JACKSON – FULL DAY

Although Australian based, Dee has spent several years living in Southern Africa and New Zealand. Watercolour is her preferred medium and she has been creating and selling commissioned portraits, from life and from photographic images, for the past 18 years. With watercolour, she is attracted to the light and shade creating seamless edges, drifting in and out of focus. Although each painting essentially begins the same way – with discussion, planning, sketching, watercolour washes and glazes – ultimately the creation is an individual experience. Her work has been featured online and in magazines all over the world. As well as winning many awards, Dee’s portraits have been commissioned throughout Australia as well as in New Zealand, Singapore, South
Africa, Sweden, United Kingdom, USA and Vietnam. This will be a figurative workshop in watercolour.

You will learn how to create life-like paintings using photographic or digital reference material. Although Dee will be demonstrating a painting of a child, you may wish to paint an animal – eg. dog, cat, elephant or giraffe. You may bring along your own photographs, however, she will have some photos of people/children as well as animals, which you may wish to use. Her workshops are always fun and informative, where you will learn how to look at composition, as well as shadows and shapes. Dee believes that proportion is the key, so will demonstrate how to measure facial features, eyes, nose, mouth etc. She will also illustrate expression, to show how a simple shape can create emotion and convey a life-like appearance.

Materials List – Don’t forget, if you don’t have everything on the list, others will be willing to share.

PAINT:

• Winsor & Newton AA or AAA rated professional watercolour paints
• Quinacridone Gold
• French Ultramarine Blue
• Permanent Alizarin Crimson
• Quinacridone Magenta
• Viridian
• Any paints you have in your paintbox, including a yellow, blue and red.

BRUSHES:

• Any Watercolour brushes you may have.
• 13mm Flat Brush
• 30mm Hake
• 5mm Pointed Brush
• Finepoint or Calligraphy/Liner Brush

PAPER:

• Large sheet of Smooth paper – Arches 100% cotton 300gsm – SMOOTH (HOT PRESSED SATINE)
• OR Large sheet Rough paper – COLD PRESSED
• Cartridge Paper for sketching

OTHER:

• Backing Board (and something to lean it on – empty shallow takeaway containers or foam brick).
• Box of Tissues (or roll of toilet tissue) – NB. Must not be impregnated with aloe vera or similar.
• 2 Medium Bulldog (or butterfly) clips.
• Masking Tape
• Palette or Plain White Plate/s for mixing paints.
• Water container
• Eraser (eg. Faber Castel DUST FREE 18 71 20)
• 2 x HB Pencils
• Ruler – in cm and inches

REFERENCE MATERIAL:

• Photo or photos of your favourite subject people or animal – NB. A totally black or dog would not be suitable,
  as there is little variation in shadows. Try to avoid ‘straight on’ view. A ¾ view gives more shadow and
  interesting shapes.
• Choose a photo that you love, which shows the character of the subject – happy, laughing, cheeky, cute etc.
• A photo of an animal should be clear (whole – seated/standing/stretching; Or close up – as much of the animal,
  face etc, as possible)
