Mellissa was born in England in the 1960s and as a child emigrated to Australia with her family. She has studied & practiced printmaking and painting continuously since the mid
‘90s and is a recipient of many prizes and awards. Her sought after works are part of many private and public collections around the world.
Living in rural Sydney overlooking the Hawkesbury River, Mellissa’s work ranges between
vibrant interpretations of her local landscape to intricate wood & linocuts. Her combination of quirkiness and calm blend to create works with a strong spiritual base. Mellissa is also an Associate of the Royal Art Society NSW.
In this workshop you will learn about shapes and colour and especially the relationship between different colours. Using Mellissa’s techniques you will learn how to create exciting
and vibrant work, sure to put a smile on your face.
Materials List: (Recommended only – bring what you have & others will share if you are missing a colour or two)
– 1 – 2 stretched canvases – Minimum size 20” x 20” (50.8 x 50.8cm) – your choice of shape! (Gesso your canvas prior to the workshop) OR
– Heavy weight smooth watercolour paper – bring backing board & tape
Acrylic Paints (Matisse Structure preferred, but just bring what you have)
– White
– Naples Yellow
– 2 Different Yellows (Cad Yellow & Lemon Yellow)
– Cadmium Red or equivalent
– 1 of the following: Alizarin, Magenta, Red Violet OR Rose Madder
– 1 of the following: Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Teal/Aqua, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine OR Phthalo Blue
– 2 of your favourite complementary colours – purple, orange, bright green
Brushes
– Flat brushes – 12, 10, 8, 6 – Synthetic preferred
– Small brush for detail
– Old round brush – 10 or 12
– Large cheap hake brushes or small wall painting brushes
Extras
– Spray bottle for water
– Palette knife (for mixing paint)
– Plastic card or scraper (old credit card)
– Palette – flatter the better, eg. white plastic plates
– Rags
– Apron
– Hairdryer (optional)
– Paper & soft pencil or charcoal for sketching
– If you decide to do a large painting, bring small plastic pots/recycled tins for paint
Optional – Acrylic Mediums, oil pastels, charcoal & fixative; Any objects meaningful or inspiring to play a part in your painting. Can be anything from a house brick to an ornate vase of flowers
NOTE: If you don’t have all the items on the materials list – DON’T PANIC! – Others will be able to share with you.
