Guy Troughton is one of Australia’s most respected watercolour artists. Best known for his beautiful bird, wildlife and landscape paintings, Guy’s work captures the spirit and essence of the natural world with a quiet intensity. Imbued with mystery, his paintings have a calm, sometimes surreal quality to them.

A fervent naturalist, Guy has travelled to many countries and spent countless hours seeking out his subjects in the wild. He loves the challenge of painting en plein-air, where everything is unpredictable, as well as in his studio. Guy promotes the medium of watercolour through the prestigious Australian Watercolour Institute (AWI) as well as teaching watercolour classes and workshops – sharing his passion and knowledge with others.

Born in the UK, Guy moved to Australia in 1997 and currently lives near Manly in Sydney with his wife Ellie and their two sons. He has exhibited regularly in Australia since 1997 and his paintings have been selected for countless major shows and art prizes including the Waterhouse Natural History Prize, the Blake Prize, the Mosman Art Prize and the Salon des Refusés.

Prior to moving to Australia, Guy exhibited in the UK and Europe, while more recently his watercolours have been on show in Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, and China. His paintings are held in many notable collections.

Materials List: Remember these are suggestions. If you do not wish to purchase more colours, just bring along
what you have. If you are missing something others will share with you.

Paper: This is the most important thing you will buy. Always get quality watercolour paper like Arches or
Saunders Waterford. Inferior paper is a nightmare and will not work! (Including cheaper papers labelled
as ‘watercolour’) [Guy mainly uses 300gms cold press].

Brushes: As long as you have a variety of brushes in reasonable condition you’ll be fine.
[Guy mostly uses synthetic rounds of varying sizes, such as 4, 8, 12, 20).

Colours: If you have warm and cool versions of the primaries you can make most other colours.
[Guy likes using earth colours, as they relate well to the natural colours seen in nature].

Guy’s 5 Basic colours:

  • Raw Sienna (W&N, Schminke, etc – Art Spectrum ‘hue light’ not ‘natural’)
  • Burnt Sienna (W&N, Schminke, etc – Art Spectrum ‘hue’ not the ‘natural’)
  • Permanent Rose
  • Ultramarine or French Ultramarine
  • Cool Yellow e.g. Hansa Yellow Light (DS), Lemon Yellow (Schmincke), or Winsor Lemon

Additional colours:

  • Cobalt Blue (Guy uses this a lot)
  • Phthalo Blue (a strong transparent cool blue)
  • Prussian Blue (a darker cool blue)
  • Indigo
  • Phthalo Green (a strong transparent cool green)
  • Warm Yellow – eg Permanent Gamgoge, Hansa Yellow or Arylide Yellow
  • Transparent Orange (Schmincke)
  • Raw Umber (Daniel Smith or Rowney)
  • Quinacridone Gold
  • Dioxazine Purple
  • Permanent Gamgoge
  • Transparent Red – eg Pyrrol Scarlet or Vermillion (Schminke)
  • Permanent White/ Titanium White – gouache or watercolour (opaque)

Guy works on a sheet of perspex with the paper taped down with masking tape. He recommends a ‘painter’s tape’ that’s claims to be removable after 24 hours, rather than cheaper tapes, which are not waterproof.

Apart from the obvious palette/water pot/kitchen paper/etc., please bring a pencil and paper to draw on and to make notes as you go. Guy will supply photos as references for you to work from. If you have a particular subject you would like him to talk to you about, then please bring that along too.
