Throughout his life, Guy has spent countless hours observing and recording wildlife and the natural world. After graduating from London’s Royal Holloway College with a degree in zoology, Guy made the decision to dedicate himself to his art and to paint and illustrate full-time. A self-taught artist, Guy is now renowned for his masterful, translucent watercolours. Guy’s work has been published in countless natural history publications and his paintings are held in notable private and public collections.
An award winning artist, Guy’s work is exhibited regularly in group exhibitions internationally and he has had many highly successful solo exhibitions. His work has also been selected for major art prizes including The Fleurieu Art Prize, The Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, The Blake Prize, The Salon des Refusés, and The Mosman Art Prize. Guy has been a member of the prestigious Australian Watercolour Institute (AWI) since 1999. An experienced and highly regarded watercolour teacher, Guy runs his own classes both in person and online from his studio in Sydney’s North Shore.
For this workshop Guy will be taking you through two paintings – one a landscape and the other a bird in the landscape.
Materials List: Remember these are suggestions. If you do not wish to purchase more colours, just bring along
what you have. If you are missing something others will share with you.
Paper:
- This is the most important thing you will buy. Always get quality watercolour paper like Arches or
Saunders Waterford. Inferior paper is a nightmare and will not work! (Including cheaper papers labelled
as ‘watercolour’) [Guy mainly uses 300gms cold press].
Brushes:
- As long as you have a variety of brushes in reasonable condition you’ll be fine.
[Guy mostly uses synthetic brushes of varying sizes, such as 4, 8, 12, 20. He does not like soft brushes
as they don’t allow his techniques to work!].
Colours:
- If you have warm and cool versions of the primaries you can make most other colours.
[Guy likes using earth colours, in addition to the primaries, as they relate well to the natural colours
seen in nature].
Guy’s 5 Basic colours:
- Raw Sienna (W&N, Schminke, etc – Art Spectrum ‘hue light’ not ‘natural’)
- Burnt Sienna (W&N, Schminke, etc – Art Spectrum ‘hue’ not the ‘natural’)
- Permanent Rose
- Ultramarine Blue
- Cool Yellow e.g. Hansa Yellow Light (DS), Lemon Yellow (Schmincke), or Winsor Lemon
Additional colours:
- Cobalt Blue (Guy uses this a lot)
- Phthalo Blue (a strong transparent cool blue)
- Prussian Blue (a darker cool blue)
- Indigo
- Phthalo Green (a strong transparent cool green)
- Warm Yellow – eg Permanent Gamgoge, Hansa Yellow or Arylide Yellow
- Transparent Orange (Schmincke)
- Raw Umber (Daniel Smith or Rowney)
- Quinacridone Gold
- Dioxazine Purple
- Permanent Gamgoge
- Transparent Red – eg Pyrrol Scarlet or Vermillion (Schminke)
- Permanent White/ Titanium White – gouache or watercolour (opaque)
Guy works on a sheet of perspex or corrugated plastic with the paper taped down with masking tape. He recommends a ‘painter’s tape’ that’s claims to be removable after 24 hours, rather than cheaper tapes, which are not waterproof.
Miscellaneous bits:
- Palette (plastic or metal)
- Water pot
- Kitchen paper (paper towel)
- Pencil
- Putty rubber
- Paper to make notes as you go.
Guy will supply photos as references for you to work from. If you have a particular subject you would like him to talk to you about, then please bring that along too.
